Ahmedabad, 17th April.
The Gujarat High Court granted interim relief to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Chaitar Vasava, allowing him to contest the Lok Sabha elections in Bharuch. This decision suspended the bail condition that prevented him from entering Narmada district until the conclusion of a rioting case from 2023.

Justice M R Mengdey stated that contesting an election is a citizen’s right in India, granting Vasava relief until the next hearing on June 12. Vasava had requested exemption from the bail condition that restricted him from Narmada and Bharuch districts.

Parts of Narmada district fall under the Bharuch Lok Sabha constituency, where Vasava is the AAP nominee for the upcoming polls. The sessions court’s condition hindered his right to contest the election freely and fairly, according to the AAP leader.

The High Court’s order suspended the bail conditions until the next hearing, acknowledging Vasava’s right to contest the election as a citizen of India. The sessions court had imposed restrictions on Vasava’s movement due to a rioting case from 2023.

Vasava was accused of various offenses, including rioting, criminal intimidation, and obstructing a public servant during an incident in Narmada district. He sought relief from the bail conditions to campaign for the election, as the trial could impact his political career.

The Gujarat government opposed Vasava’s request for relief, citing his conduct and misuse of liberty granted by the sessions court. However, the High Court’s decision allows Vasava to continue his election campaign in Bharuch.
