The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress have both requested additional time from the Election Commission (EC) to respond to notices regarding alleged violations of the model code of conduct. According to sources, the BJP has asked for one more week, while the Congress has sought an extension of 14 days.

The notices were issued to BJP President J P Nadda and Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge following complaints against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, and Kharge for alleged violations of the model code.

Initially, both parties were expected to respond by 11 am on Monday. However, the BJP has requested a week’s time, whereas the Congress initially asked for until 5 pm on Monday but later sought an extension of 14 days.

The Election Commission has not yet confirmed whether these requests have been granted.

The EC’s notice to Nadda marked the first instance of a prime minister being issued a notice for a model code violation. This notice pertained to allegations that Modi delivered a divisive speech in Rajasthan’s Banswara.

In a separate instance, the EC also issued a notice to Kharge, prompting him to respond to complaints filed by the BJP against him and Rahul Gandhi regarding their remarks.

The decisions of the Election Commission regarding the extension requests are awaited as the political parties prepare their responses to the allegations.
