United Nations, 2nd May.
India expressed optimism that Palestine’s attempt to become a full member of the United Nations, which was blocked by the US last month, will be reviewed and supported in its quest to join the global organization.

Last month, the US vetoed a resolution in the UN Security Council regarding Palestine’s bid for full UN membership. The resolution received 12 votes in favor, with Switzerland and the UK abstaining, and the US casting a veto. The draft resolution needed at least nine Council members to vote in favor without any vetoes from the five permanent members.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, stated that despite the Security Council’s rejection of Palestine’s application, India hopes it will be reconsidered and endorsed. India has a long history of supporting Palestine, being the first non-Arab state to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1974 and the State of Palestine in 1988.

Currently, Palestine holds a non-member observer state status at the UN, allowing participation in discussions but not voting on resolutions. India reiterated its support for a two-state solution through direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine for lasting peace.

India also condemned the recent conflict in Gaza, emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid and urging all parties to work towards peace. India has provided aid to Palestine and will continue to do so. The conflict has resulted in significant civilian casualties and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

India called for an immediate increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza to prevent further deterioration of the situation. The UN reported high casualties in Gaza and Israel, highlighting the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.
