Bharat Pavilion Inaugurated at 77th Cannes Film Festival

 In a celebration of Indian cinema’s global impact, the Bharat Pavilion was inaugurated today at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in France. This year, Bharat stands tall with multiple official selections across various sections, adding an aura of magic to the festival.

Hosted annually by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India, the Bharat Pavilion is spearheaded by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) as the nodal agency and FICCI as the industry partner. It symbolizes India’s ongoing commitment to showcase its cinematic richness and foster collaborations with the global film fraternity.

The grand inauguration, led by Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Shri. Sanjay Jaju, and Shri. Jawed Ashraf, Ambassador of India to France, was graced by esteemed dignitaries, renowned filmmakers, and industry leaders. Among the guests were Ms. Tholoana Rose Ncheke, Chairperson of the National Film and Video Foundation, South Africa, Mr. Christian Jeune, Director of Films Department at Cannes Film Festival, and Filmmaker Richie Mehta, among others.

Shri Sanjay Jaju expressed his delight at the increased presence of Indian projects in the Cannes official selection this year. He acknowledged the government’s support towards incentivizing and promoting these projects, emphasizing the pivotal role of the Bharat Pavilion as a hub for networking, collaboration, and promotion of Indian cinema on the global stage.

H.E. Jawed Ashraf highlighted India’s rising global prominence, especially in the realm of cinema, and emphasized the importance of leveraging cinema to enhance India’s soft power on the international stage.

Filmmaker Richie Mehta expressed gratitude for the festivals’ role in shaping his career and reiterated his mission to export the richness of Indian storytelling and culture to the world.

Several Indian states, including Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, are represented at the Cannes Film Market, showcasing their picturesque locales and incentives for international film shoots. Notably, Jammu & Kashmir’s participation marks its debut at the Cannes Film Market, presenting its breathtaking landscapes to global production companies.

The Bharat Pavilion promises to be a vibrant platform, offering insights into Indian films, talent, and industry opportunities through engaging panel discussions and networking sessions throughout the festival. With its dynamic presence, the pavilion aims to further elevate the global stature of Indian cinema.
