Engineer Rashid, a former J&K legislator who is currently in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, had his nomination papers filed for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency on Monday.

The Awami Itihad Party (AIP) founder, Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, had his nomination papers submitted by the party to Baramulla’s Returning Officer Minga Sherpa after completing all necessary legal and administrative requirements, according to party spokesman Firdous Baba.

“We were waiting for approval from the authorities to proceed with the submission of papers, and we were able to complete the formalities yesterday (Sunday),” he said.

Engineer Rashid’s elder son, Abrar Rashid, has been named as the backup candidate by the party.

Engineer Rashid is currently in Tihar jail due to an alleged money laundering case.

His entry into the electoral race in the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency has made it a three-way contest, with former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of the National Conference and Sajad Gani Lone of the Peoples Conference as his opponents. The J&K Apni Party, led by Syed Altaf Bukhari, is supporting Lone in this constituency and not putting forward any candidate.
