New Delhi, 12th April.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a comprehensive review meeting to assess the nation’s preparedness for the upcoming heat wave season, emphasizing a whole-of-government approach to tackle potential challenges.

The meeting, held to address concerns regarding the period from April to June 2024, highlighted forecasts indicating above-normal maximum temperatures, particularly over Central India and the western peninsular region.

During the session, Prime Minister Modi was briefed on various aspects of preparedness, including the availability of essential medical supplies such as medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and drinking water within the health sector.

Of paramount importance was the timely dissemination of essential Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) material, especially in regional languages, across all platforms including television, radio, and social media.

Recognizing the significance of this initiative, especially given the projected hotter-than-normal summer coinciding with the General Elections, Prime Minister Modi directed that advisories issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) be translated into regional languages for widespread dissemination.

The Prime Minister underscored the need for a unified approach, stressing collaboration among all arms of the government at the Central, State, and District levels, as well as various ministries, to effectively combat heat-related challenges.

He also emphasized the importance of raising awareness alongside ensuring adequate preparation in hospitals to handle potential heat-related health issues.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the significance of swift detection and suppression of forest fires to mitigate their impact on the environment and public health.

Attended by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary, officials from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the meeting acted as a platform to strategize and coordinate efforts to safeguard citizens against the adverse effects of heat waves and related emergencies.
