Manipur, 28th April.
The Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency in north-eastern India has six polling places. The Election Commission of India has ruled that the polls conducted at these locations are invalid and has scheduled new elections for April 30. Since no voting phase is scheduled for April 30 in any other part of the nation, the polling at these sites will be conducted independently. On May 7, the third of the seven voting phases is expected to take place.

“The Election Commission of India has, under Sections 58(2) and 58A(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, directed that the poll taken on April 26, 2024 (Friday) in respect of 6 polling stations listed in the table below of 2- Outer Manipur (ST) Parliamentary Constituency to be void and appointed April 30, 2024 (Tuesday) as the date for taking fresh poll at the said polling stations with hours of poll from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM,” a press release stated.

The voters at these polling places were invited to exercise their right to vote by turning out in big numbers by Chief Electoral Officer Pradeep Kumar Jha. In Manipur, voting for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 has already ended. On Friday, April 26, 13 Assembly segments in the state’s Outer Manipur constituency cast ballots in the second phase of voting.

Previously, after numerous violent occurrences were recorded after the first round of voting on April 19, re-elections were conducted across 11 polling places in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat on April 22.

On June 4, the results and vote totals will be announced.

Months after ethnic violence broke out in the north-eastern state of Manipur, things still haven’t fully returned to normal there. However, in the past few weeks, efforts to mend the rift between the two ethnic groups involved in the violence have given rise to optimism that things will soon return to normal in the state that is home to some of India’s best Olympians.
