Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, faces the prospect of suspension from the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) today over allegations of sexual assault depicted in explicit videos. The party, currently in alliance with the BJP for the Lok Sabha elections, is anticipated to address the matter during a core committee meeting scheduled for 10 am in Hubbali.

Prajwal Revanna has vehemently denied the allegations, asserting that the circulated videos are fabricated. However, the JD(S) leadership, including HD Kumaraswamy, former chief minister and Prajwal’s uncle, has indicated that a decision to suspend him has already been made and is awaiting endorsement at the core committee meeting.

A case of sexual harassment and stalking has been lodged against Prajwal Revanna, prompting the Karnataka government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the charges. The SIT is expected to visit Hassan, Prajwal’s constituency, to conduct investigations.

The scandal emerged following Phase 2 voting last Friday, coinciding with Prajwal Revanna’s departure to Germany. He has since returned and filed a police complaint asserting the videos are doctored.

While political adversaries have seized on the scandal to question the JD(S)’s alliance with the BJP, HD Kumaraswamy has clarified that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are not connected to the case. The state BJP has distanced itself from the controversy, refraining from comment on the ongoing SIT probe.

In addition to the sex scandal, Prajwal Revanna and his father, HD Revanna, an MLA, face accusations of sexually harassing their house help multiple times between 2019 and 2022, adding further complexity to the unfolding situation.
