Islamabad, 30th April.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, a prominent figure in Pakistan’s right-wing Islamic circles and chief of his faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F), lashed out at Pakistan’s political establishment and drew stark comparisons with neighboring India.

Rehman voiced support for the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), asserting their right to hold rallies and potentially form a government. He criticized the alleged interference of the powerful establishment in political affairs, questioning the legitimacy of recent elections and drawing attention to discrepancies in the electoral process.

Expressing dismay over Pakistan’s current state compared to India’s aspirations, Rehman emphasized the stark contrast in trajectories since both countries gained independence. While India dreams of superpower status, Pakistan, according to Rehman, finds itself in a position of dependency and economic instability.

Rehman also lamented the secularization of Pakistan, highlighting the failure to implement recommendations from the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) and advocating for a return to Islamic principles in governance. He criticized the reliance on international financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), portraying Pakistan as a nation on the brink of bankruptcy.

The JUI-F leader’s support for PTI, despite their past rivalry, is seen by many as a strategic move to exert pressure on the establishment and government, potentially aiming for a larger share of political power.
