New Delhi, 9th May.
India reacted critically to the recent arrest of three Indian nationals in Canada, accused of killing a prominent Khalistani figure. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, while acknowledging the arrests, pointed fingers at “political interests at work” in Canada.

Key Points:

• Three Indian men – Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh – were arrested in Edmonton, Canada, on suspicion of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani leader.

• India claims it received no official diplomatic notification about the arrests and no evidence linking them to the Indian government has been provided by Canada.

• Jaiswal accused Canada of creating a space for “separatists, extremists, and those advocating violence,” further straining already tense relations.

• He highlighted past issues like threats against Indian diplomats and the granting of visas to individuals India believes are linked to organized crime.

Tensions Simmer:

This incident adds fuel to the ongoing diplomatic friction between India and Canada. Last year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed “credible allegations” of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing, which India vehemently denied.

India’s Concerns:

India’s primary concerns seem to be:

• Lack of transparency and evidence sharing from Canada regarding the arrests.

• Canada’s alleged tolerance for Khalistani separatist activities.

• The granting of visas to individuals India considers a security threat.

Unresolved Issues:

Jaiswal indicated ongoing discussions at the diplomatic level, aiming to address these issues and potentially improve relations. However, the lack of trust and concrete steps towards resolving these concerns suggests continued tension between the two nations.
