The Election Commission of India has issued a notice to Bharat Rashtra Samiti President and former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) for his “derogatory” remarks against the Congress Party during a press conference.

Acting on a complaint filed by Congress leader G Niranjan, the Commission noted that KCR violated the Model Code of Conduct during his press meeting in Sircilla on April 5.

The notice highlighted that KCR had been issued several advisories and instructions regarding his speech in the past.

The Commission has asked KCR to explain his stance on his remarks by 11 am on April 18. Failure to respond within the stipulated time may result in appropriate action by the Election Commission.

In a separate development, the Election Commission shared actions taken since the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct from March 16, 2024, with the announcement of the general elections to the Lok Sabha.

Out of the total complaints received, 51 were from the Bharatiya Janata Party, with action taken in 38 cases, and 59 were from the Congress, with action taken in 51 cases. Additionally, 90 complaints were received from other parties, with action taken in 80 cases.

The Election Commission highlighted some “exemplary decisions” taken during the last month of the Model Code of Conduct to ensure a level playing field among political parties.

Notably, the Commission emphasized its commitment to upholding the dignity and honor of women by issuing notices to leaders of parties who made derogatory and offensive remarks against women.
