In a move aimed at bolstering voter turnout and fostering greater participation in the democratic process, the Chief Electoral Office of Delhi has announced a paid holiday for eligible employees on the day of Lok Sabha polls on May 25.

Under the directive, all eligible employees, whether from the public or private sector, who are registered voters in Delhi, will be granted a paid holiday to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

Additionally, voters commuting from neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan to work in Delhi will also benefit from the paid holiday, as stipulated in the order.

The decision comes as a proactive measure endorsed by the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, P Krishnamurthy, in alignment with the Election Commission of India (ECI) Order, which invokes Section 135B of the RP Act 1951.

“This move is a significant step towards enhancing voter turnout and fostering active participation in the electoral process,” stated the announcement.

Furthermore, the statement emphasized reciprocity, ensuring that voters from Delhi employed in neighbouring cities, and vice versa, are also granted a paid holiday on their respective polling dates.

The initiative aims to remove obstacles to voter participation and elevate awareness among the residents of Delhi, emphasizing the importance of exercising their franchise.

Employers across various sectors are urged to adhere to the directive and ensure that their employees have unfettered access to the polling booths on voting day.
