New Delhi, 13th March.
The Central Government has officially designated September 17 as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’, commemorating the liberation of Hyderabad from Nizam’s rule in 1948 through ‘Operation Polo’.

A notification issued by the Union Home Ministry highlighted the historical significance of the day, noting that Hyderabad remained under the reign of the Nizams for 13 months post-India’s independence on August 15, 1947. The liberation from Nizam’s rule on September 17, 1948, marked a pivotal moment in India’s history.

Responding to the longstanding demand from the people of the region, the Government of India has decided to observe September 17 annually as ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’. This decision aims to honor the sacrifices of the martyrs who played a crucial role in liberating Hyderabad and to instill a sense of patriotism among the youth.

Home Minister Amit Shah lauded the significance of this move, emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to commemorate the day as a tribute to the freedom fighters who fought against the oppressive Nizam regime. He hailed the decision as a fitting homage to those who made supreme sacrifices to integrate Hyderabad into the Indian Union.

The struggle for liberation stemmed from the resistance against the Razakars, a private militia, who advocated for Hyderabad to either join Pakistan or become a Muslim dominion, opposing its merger with India. The people of the region valiantly fought against the atrocities of the Razakars to ensure Hyderabad’s integration into the Union of India.

On September 17, 1948, Hyderabad state was annexed into the Union of India through military action, led by then Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Over the years, the Narendra Modi government has consistently commemorated ‘Hyderabad Liberation Day’ on September 17, underscoring its significance in India’s history. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been a prominent attendee at these annual events, reaffirming the government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of those who contributed to Hyderabad’s liberation.
