Kolkata, 15th July. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee suddenly visited Raj Bhavan on Wednesday to meet Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar amid the ongoing clashes between the Bengal government and Raj Bhavan on various issues.
The meeting between the Governor and Mamata Banerjee was held for about an hour and a half. Mamata reportedly left the state secretariat at around 3.30 pm and reached Raj Bhavan directly. The Governor presented a bouquet and welcomed Mamata. The governor’s wife and first lady of the state Sudesh Dhankhar was also present. After the meeting, it is being speculated that the confrontation between the Governor and the CM may come to an end. Though there is no disclosure on the issue on which the two have discussed, the meeting between the CM and the Governor after the assembly session is seen as politically important.
Sources said, during the budget session of the Assembly, the state government has passed a bill to set up a Legislative Council in the state. Mamata wants to set up a Legislative Council in the state. The issue is likely to be discussed between the two. According to sources, the Governor has also expressed concern to the Chief Minister during the meeting in the context of the post-election violence. Moreover, a day earlier, BJP MLAs led by leader of opposition in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, had met the Governor and complained to the Governor against Mukul Roy being made the speaker of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Assembly.
Notably, there has been a clash between Raj Bhavan and the state government since Dhankhar took over as the constitutional head of the state in July 2019. The confrontation escalated recently when Mamata accused the governor of being involved in the Jain Hawala case, calling him a corrupt man. However, the governor had rejected all the allegations.
