New Delhi, 7th Feb. India witnessed a single-day rise of 157 COVID-19 infections, with the number of active cases standing at 1,496, according to the latest update from the Union health ministry on Wednesday.
Within the past 24 hours, two new deaths were reported, one each from Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh, as per the ministry’s data updated at 8 am.
The surge in daily cases began after December 5, following the emergence of a new variant, JN.1, and amidst cold weather conditions. However, the highest single-day rise of 841 cases, accounting for 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, was recorded on December 31, 2023, according to official sources.
Of the 1,496 active cases, approximately 92 per cent are currently recovering in home isolation.
Official sources stated that available data suggests the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases or a surge in hospitalization and mortality rates.
India has experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the peak daily cases and deaths reported during the Delta wave in April-June 2021. At its peak, 4,14,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths were recorded on May 7, 2021.
Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, over 4.5 crore people have been infected, and more than 5.3 lakh have died across the country. However, the number of recoveries has surpassed 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, as per the health ministry website.
India has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines to date, according to the latest data on the ministry’s website.
