TMC Defends Mamata Banerjee Amid Protests Over Doctor’s Murder, Calls Resignation Demands ‘Patriarchal’

Kolkata, 26th August. Amid widespread protests following the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has come to the defense of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, terming opposition demands for her resignation as “patriarchal.”

Bengal minister Chandrima Bhattacharya questioned why male chief ministers aren’t held to the same scrutiny when similar crimes occur in their states. “Why the demand for the resignation of the only woman Chief Minister who has won three successive elections?” she asked, highlighting what she sees as a double standard.

Students and doctors have been staging protests, including a planned march, demanding justice for the victim, whose body was found on August 9 in the hospital. The TMC accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of inciting unrest through these protests, referring to it as “vulture politics.”

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh further questioned the motives of the rally heading to the state secretariat, stating that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is already handling the case.

The BJP, however, denied orchestrating the protests, asserting that any members who participate do so in their personal capacity. The opposition has accused the TMC of covering up the crime and protecting the accused, calling for CM Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.
