Lucknow, 26th August. In a recent statement, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati revisited the infamous 1995 Lucknow ‘state guest house incident’ to launch a scathing attack on the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress. The BSP supremo condemned the SP for the violent assault on her during the crisis and criticized the Congress for its failure to intervene despite being in power at the Centre.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mayawati recalled the events of June 2, 1995, when she had withdrawn her support from the Mulayam Singh Yadav government. She alleged that SP workers had attacked her at the state guest house in Lucknow, following her decision. She pointed out that the Congress, then in power, did not take timely action to address the situation.
Mayawati stated, “The SP carried out a deadly attack on me after the BSP withdrew its support. Why does the Congress never speak on this? The Congress government at the Centre during that time also did not fulfill its responsibility.” She added that the intervention by Congress came only after significant pressure, including opposition protests and a gherao of Parliament.
The 1995 guest house incident was a dramatic turning point in Indian politics. Following the attack, the Governor dismissed the Mulayam Singh Yadav government and invited Mayawati to form a new government. The violent episode left a lasting rift between the SP and BSP, although they eventually formed a brief electoral alliance in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Mayawati’s recent remarks highlight ongoing tensions and her dissatisfaction with past responses to the crisis. The BSP leader’s comments also come in the wake of her recent gratitude towards Akhilesh Yadav for his stance on derogatory remarks made by a BJP MLA against her.
