Rampur, 29th August. Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and former MLA from Rampur, Azam Khan, has received a major relief as the MP-MLA Court acquitted him in a case related to the Model Code of Conduct.
Despite the acquittal, Khan will not be released from jail as he faces other ongoing cases.
The accusation against him was that he violated the Model Code of Conduct by arriving at a polling station in a vehicle within a 200-meter radius, which is prohibited.
The complaint was filed by the then SDM Sadar and Returning Officer during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, under sections 171F and 133 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Representation of the People Act.
Earlier, on July 31, the MP-MLA Court had acquitted Khan and others in the Dungarpur case, which dated back to 2016 when the SP was in power and Khan was a cabinet minister. His lawyer, Mohammad Mursaleen, stated that the case was filed by the then SDM of Rampur, P.P. Tiwari, during the 2019 elections.
The charge sheet led to a trial in court where five witnesses were presented, but the prosecution failed to prove the charges, leading to Khan’s acquittal.
