Thiruvananthapuram, 2nd Sept. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has emphasized the sensitive nature of the caste census and warned against using it as a tool for election campaigning. This statement came during a three-day coordination meeting in Palakkad, Kerala, where the RSS underscored that the caste census should be approached seriously and only for welfare purposes, not political gains.
Sunil Ambekar, the RSS’ chief spokesperson, highlighted the organization’s stance, saying, “This is not just for election campaigning… should not be used as a political tool. We draw the line there.” He further stated that while the government may require caste-related data for policy-making and welfare initiatives, it should not exploit the information for electoral advantages.
The caste census has been a significant demand of the opposition, particularly the Congress-led INDIA bloc, and has also been supported by at least one BJP ally. Prominent leaders like Rahul Gandhi have pushed for the census, arguing that it is essential for effective policy-making and ensuring equitable representation in India.
The discussion around a nationwide caste census intensified following the release of Bihar’s statewide survey results last year, which revealed that over 80% of the state’s population belongs to extremely backward classes. The Bihar report has sparked further debate on the necessity of a national caste count, with varying opinions within the ruling alliance.
BJP President JP Nadda previously stated that the party is “not against conducting a caste census” but did not provide a specific plan. Nadda also accused the opposition of attempting to divide the country with their demand.
The RSS, while expressing openness to “scientific affirmative action,” has cautioned that the caste census should not be conducted for electoral benefits, emphasizing the need to address disparities in society rather than exploiting them for political gain.
