“Abolish Governor’s Post,” says Congress Leader Abhishek Singhvi

GG News Bureau
New Delhi, 2nd Sept. Amid increasing tensions between governors and opposition-led state governments, senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi has called for the abolition of the governor’s post or, alternatively, the appointment of individuals of stature who are not involved in “petty politics.”

Speaking on Monday, Singhvi stressed that governors should not act as “a second chief executive” or a “second sword in the same scabbard” alongside the Chief Minister.

Singhvi’s remarks, made during an interview with PTI, come amid ongoing conflicts between governors and state governments in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Karnataka. He criticized the current administration for diminishing the role of institutions, stating that the government’s actions have led to governance issues and hindered decision-making processes.

The Congress leader also expressed concern over the repeated standoffs between the Chair and opposition members in Parliament, calling for reforms to ensure the impartiality of the Chair. He highlighted the importance of allowing democratic processes to function properly and condemned the suspension of opposition members as a negation of democracy.

Singhvi’s comments add to the ongoing debate about the role of governors in India’s federal structure, with many opposition leaders arguing that the position has become overly politicized under the current government.
