Chandigarh, 15th May. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday announced a new district in Punjab. He declared that Malerkotla would be the new district of Punjab. Malerkotla is a Muslim-majority town located in Sangrur district. Amargarh and Ahmedgarh along with Malerkotla will also be a part of the 23rd district of Punjab. The district’s status to Malerkotla, 35 km from Sangrur district headquarters, was the Congress’s election commitment.
Addressing a program organized online at the state level to congratulate people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, the Chief Minister announced a medical college, a women’s college, a new bus stand and one women’s police station for Malerkotla worth Rs 500 crore.
Announcing the new district, the chief minister said, “I know this has been a long pending demand.”
In a tweet he said, “Happy to share that on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, my Govt has announced Malerkotla as the newest district in the state. The 23rd district holds huge historical significance. Have ordered to immediately locate a suitable site for the district administrative complex.”
