Guwahati, 21st Feb. The Khelo India University games commenced on February 19, 2024, in Guwahati with an inaugural ceremony graced by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the athletes via a video message, highlighting the significance of the event in promoting sports and unity across the nation.

PM Modi commended the mascot choice of Ashtalakshmi, symbolizing the North East’s aspirations taking flight. He encouraged athletes to play with determination, emphasizing the value of sportsmanship and resilience. The Prime Minister applauded the nationwide sports initiatives, acknowledging the efforts of various state governments in fostering a culture of sports excellence.

Thakur expressed pride in hosting the 4th Khelo India University Games, bringing together 4544 athletes from across the country to compete in 20 sports disciplines. He highlighted the inclusion of yoga and traditional sports like Mallakhamb, reflecting the government’s commitment to promoting fitness and well-being.
