New Delhi, 22nd August. The Election Commission of India (ECI) conducted a comprehensive briefing for over 400 Observers assigned to oversee the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana. The session, held at Rang Bhawan Auditorium in New Delhi, aimed to prepare General, Police, and Expenditure Observers for their critical roles in ensuring free and fair elections.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. S.S. Sandhu, emphasized the importance of the Observers’ roles in maintaining the integrity of the election process. Observers were advised to be vigilant against false narratives and ensure timely redressal of grievances from parties, candidates, and voters.
The briefing covered various aspects of election management, including adherence to the Model Code of Conduct, election expenditure monitoring, and the use of EVMs and VVPATs. Observers were also instructed to maintain accessibility and visibility, ensuring that their contact information is widely publicized for ease of communication.
In his address, Chief Election Commissioner Kumar stressed that Observers must overcome language barriers and ensure that there are no gaps in communication. He underscored the importance of their impartiality and responsiveness in upholding the democratic process.
