Srinagar, 22nd August. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Thursday claimed his “blood” ties with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, declaring the restoration of statehood for the region a “priority” for himself and his party.
Speaking at a party event in Srinagar attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Gandhi criticized the Modi government for not restoring statehood before the elections but expressed optimism that it would be addressed soon.
Gandhi urged J&K voters, who will cast ballots in the Assembly elections on September 18, 25, and October 1, to “open shops of love in the market of hatred,” referencing his Bharat Jodo Yatra slogan. He emphasized his long-standing connection with J&K and promised that restoring statehood and democratic rights would be a top priority for the Congress and the INDIA bloc.
He highlighted the unique situation of J&K being the only region downgraded from a state to a union territory post-independence and stressed his commitment to alleviating the pain of J&K’s people.
The upcoming Assembly elections will be held in three phases, with results scheduled for October 4.
