Accra, 3rd July: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a special session of Ghana’s Parliament today, underscored the shared democratic ideals of India and Ghana, while calling for credible reforms in global governance and a greater voice for the Global South. The landmark address marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister spoke before Ghana’s legislature, deepening the bilateral partnership between the two democracies.
Welcomed by Speaker Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, the session was attended by members of Parliament, senior government officials, and dignitaries. PM Modi began his speech by conveying greetings on behalf of 1.4 billion Indians and acknowledging the “enduring friendship” between the two nations.
“As the representative of the world’s largest democracy, I bring with me the goodwill and greetings of 1.4 billion Indians,” said Prime Minister Modi.
He described democracy as an integral part of India’s ethos, not just a governance system, and praised Ghana’s own democratic resilience. Drawing parallels between the two nations’ struggles against colonial rule, he noted that while “our histories bear scars of colonialism, our spirits have always remained free and fearless.”
Quoting Ghana’s founding leader Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, PM Modi emphasized that democracy thrives on unity, debate, and dignity. “True democracy promotes discussion and debate; it unites people, supports dignity, and promotes human rights,” he stated.
Addressing global issues, the Prime Minister stressed that the current world order—shaped after World War II—must adapt to modern realities. “The world order is changing rapidly due to technological revolutions, the rise of the Global South, and shifting demographics,” he said, calling for “credible and effective reforms” in international institutions.
Highlighting India’s role on the world stage, Modi described the country as the “fastest-growing emerging economy” and a global hub for innovation. “A strong India will contribute to a more stable and prosperous world,” he asserted.
He praised Ghana’s vibrant parliamentary system and welcomed the establishment of the Ghana-India Parliamentary Friendship Society. The Prime Minister also reiterated India’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development journey.
Calling for deeper cooperation between the Global South, PM Modi underlined India’s push to secure permanent membership for the African Union in the G20 during its presidency—an initiative that has since materialized.
He concluded by reaffirming India’s commitment to working alongside Ghana for global peace, sustainable development, and a democratic future.
