A recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has shed light on significant flaws in Telangana’s Kaleshwaram project. The report highlights economic unviability, massive cost overruns, and lapses in planning.

Originally projected to cost ₹81,911 crore by the Central Water Commission, the project’s expenses are now anticipated to exceed ₹1.47 lakh crore. The report, presented in the legislative assembly, emphasizes the project’s unviability from its inception.

Controversy surrounds the project, particularly following structural issues at the Medigadda barrage. The National Dam Safety Authority’s findings in November deemed the barrage severely compromised, with significant renovation needed.

The project’s execution and planning have drawn criticism, with the absence of comprehensive administrative approval and funding strategies. Moreover, the report identifies potential undue benefits to contractors and inflated Benefit-Cost Ratios, raising concerns about the project’s economic feasibility.

Operational challenges, including excessive energy demands and incomplete command area development, further underscore the project’s shortcomings.

The report calls for urgent reassessment and strategic planning to address these issues and ensure prudent use of public resources.
