New Delhi, 5th Jan. Bharat finds itself at the center of a whirlwind of allegations and geopolitical controversies, as a recent report by The Washington Post accused the country of involvement in covert operations in the Maldives and Pakistan, as well as raising tensions with China over territorial disputes. In its characteristic assertive style, Bharat has firmly denied the claims, categorizing them as “baseless and without credibility.” These developments reflect the complex and high-stakes geopolitical environment of South Asia, where narratives often blur the lines between facts, misinformation, and strategic intent.
Bharat and the Alleged Maldives Impeachment Plot
The report by The Washington Post claimed that members of the Maldivian opposition had approached Bharat, seeking $6 million to orchestrate an impeachment against President Mohamed Muizzu. The accusations also suggested that Bharatiya intelligence agencies had been exploring plans to destabilize Muizzu’s government shortly after his election victory.
The allegations were swiftly rejected by Bharat’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal denouncing the report as part of a pattern of “compulsive hostility” by the newspaper. “As far as we are concerned, these claims have no credibility,” Jaiswal stated during the weekly press briefing on January 3, 2025.

Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, a prominent opposition figure and leader of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), also dismissed the allegations. Nasheed emphasized Bharat’s long-standing commitment to democratic principles, stating, “Bharat has consistently supported democratic values and would never resort to such actions.”
These accusations come at a time when the Maldives is navigating a delicate political balance. President Muizzu, seen as favoring closer ties with China, has sparked concerns in New Delhi about a potential shift in the island nation’s strategic alignment. However, Bharat’s unequivocal denial suggests its focus remains on fostering stability and democratic governance in its neighborhood, avoiding any direct interference.
Claims of Covert Operations in Pakistan
In a separate but equally contentious claim, The Washington Post alleged that Bharat had been conducting covert operations in Pakistan, targeting terrorists linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). These allegations have been met with strong responses from Bharat, which has long accused Pakistan of harboring terrorist groups that threaten regional stability.
Quoting former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, MEA spokesperson Jaiswal underscored Bharat’s concerns about Pakistan’s continued support for terrorism: “You can’t keep snakes in your backyard and expect them only to bite your neighbors.” The statement not only dismissed the allegations but also highlighted Bharat’s broader frustration with Pakistan’s unwillingness to curb terrorist activities on its soil.
The reference to Clinton’s remarks served as a reminder of Bharat’s consistent stance on counter-terrorism. By emphasizing its commitment to targeting terrorism and safeguarding national security, Bharat reaffirmed its role as a responsible regional power in the face of baseless accusations.
China’s Aggression and Bharat’s Response
The controversies surrounding the Maldives and Pakistan coincided with renewed tensions between Bharat and China. Beijing recently announced the establishment of two new counties—He’an and Hekang—in Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang, which reportedly include significant portions of Bharatiya territory in Ladakh, an area that has been under Chinese occupation since the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
Bharat’s MEA issued a sharp rebuke, reiterating its sovereignty over the region. “We have never accepted the illegal Chinese occupation of Bharatiya territory in this area,” Jaiswal said. “Creation of new counties will neither have a bearing on Bharat’s long-standing and consistent position regarding our sovereignty over the area nor lend legitimacy to China’s illegal and forcible occupation.”
Bharat’s protest through diplomatic channels reflects its determination to resist China’s attempts to alter the status quo in disputed areas. These actions are part of a broader pattern of Chinese expansionism, which has prompted Bharat to bolster its defense infrastructure and enhance partnerships with like-minded nations in the Indo-Pacific.
A Calculated Campaign Against Bharat?
The simultaneous emergence of allegations involving the Maldives, Pakistan, and China raises questions about whether these narratives are part of a coordinated effort to undermine Bharat’s global standing. The MEA’s assertion that The Washington Post harbors a “compulsive hostility” towards Bharat highlights a growing perception in New Delhi that sections of the international media may be fueling misinformation to serve specific agendas.
Bharat’s decisive dismissal of these claims underscores its confidence in its policies and its refusal to be drawn into baseless controversies. At the same time, the country’s strategic priorities remain clear: promoting stability in its neighborhood, countering terrorism, and safeguarding its territorial integrity.
Conclusion: Bharat’s Steadfast Diplomacy Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The recent wave of allegations against Bharat highlights the challenges of navigating a complex geopolitical environment characterized by shifting alliances, regional rivalries, and the spread of misinformation. Bharat’s strong rebuttals—whether to accusations of meddling in the Maldives, conducting covert operations in Pakistan, or tolerating China’s territorial aggression—reflect its commitment to transparency, democratic values, and regional stability.
As Bharat continues to assert its role as a major global player, its responses to these controversies demonstrate a balance between firmness and diplomacy. By rejecting baseless claims while addressing legitimate concerns, Bharat reaffirms its position as a responsible power in an increasingly volatile world. Through its measured yet resolute approach, New Delhi sends a clear message: it will not be swayed by unfounded accusations, nor will it compromise on its principles or national interests.
