‘Love Bite or Assault?’: Kolkata Law Student’s Shocking Defence in Rape Case

Kolkata, 2nd July: Just months after the R.G. Kar Medical College rape-murder case rocked West Bengal, another disturbing incident involving a student from Kolkata’s law college has surfaced, triggering public outrage and a high-stakes investigation.

As police deepen their probe into the alleged rape case involving law student Manojit Mishra, his lawyer, Raju Ganguly, on Wednesday made a striking claim: the accused bears no visible scratch marks commonly associated with resistance in rape cases, except for what was described as a “love bite.”

Speaking to the media outside the courtroom, Ganguly recounted his conversation with Mishra. “I asked him what happened that day (June 27) and why such serious charges were being made. He told me, ‘Everyone is making me out to be a villain,’” Ganguly said.

According to the lawyer, Mishra then removed his shirt to show that he had no injuries or marks from the alleged encounter. Ganguly noted one visible mark on the neck. “I pointed to the mark and asked what it was. He replied, ‘That is a love bite.’ Before I could ask who gave it to him, police officers took him away,” Ganguly stated.

In a significant development, Ganguly called for the victim’s phone to be seized and sent for forensic analysis, suggesting that phone records and communication history could offer critical context to the case. “After reviewing the call records, I feel that perhaps this may not be a rape case. But I have not reached a conclusion yet. I will be in a position to say more definitively by July 20,” the lawyer added.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Police confirmed that the case has now been handed over to the detective department for further investigation. Officials said all digital and forensic evidence, including call records and CCTV footage, will be examined thoroughly.

The incident has reignited discussions about student safety on campuses and the need for swift and impartial investigations in sexual assault cases. While the investigation proceeds, public sentiment remains tense, and both sides await forensic findings and legal scrutiny in what is shaping up to be one of the city’s most high-profile campus cases in recent times.
