New Delhi, 19th June: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune, Maharashtra, that claimed nine lives. Extending his condolences, the Prime Minister also announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in Pune, Maharashtra. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”

The accident occurred around 6:45 pm on Wednesday outside a hotel on the Jejuri-Morgaon road. According to Pune Rural Police, a speeding Sedan carrying six passengers veered off the road and crashed into a pick-up truck parked outside the hotel. The truck was being unloaded when the vehicle rammed into it.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Tanaji Barade said the deceased included the hotel owner, the pick-up driver, and three workers assisting with unloading a refrigerator. Four people in the car — including a six-year-old boy and a woman — were also killed in the collision. Two more passengers in the car, a woman and her daughter, sustained injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what caused the vehicle to lose control.
