New Delhi, 20th June. Amid escalating heatwave conditions gripping the nation, Union Health Minister Shri J P Nadda conducted a comprehensive review today with senior officials from the Health Ministry. The focus of the meeting was to assess the readiness of hospitals and healthcare facilities to effectively manage the heatwave crisis.

Shri Nadda emphasized the critical need for all hospitals to be fully prepared to deliver optimal healthcare to those affected by the extreme heat. In a significant directive, he instructed the establishment of special heatwave units in central government hospitals to enhance response capabilities.

In line with these directives, the Health Ministry promptly issued a detailed advisory to state health departments outlining essential measures for mitigating the health impacts of the impending heatwave. The advisory includes guidelines on the National Action Plan on Heat Related Illnesses, strengthening health system preparedness, and integrating heat-health action plans at both state and district levels.

Key components of the advisory involve early dissemination of heatwave forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), ensuring adequate supply of essential medicines and cooling equipment at health facilities, and conducting sensitization programs for healthcare staff and community health workers on heat-related illness management.

Furthermore, the Health Ministry underscored the importance of coordination between health departments, local administrations, and relevant stakeholders during mass gatherings and sporting events to prevent and manage heat-related illnesses effectively. Detailed protocols for event planning, including provision for safe drinking water and shaded areas, were outlined to safeguard attendees from heat stress.

Addressing the media post-review, Shri Nadda reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring public health and safety during the challenging heatwave season. He urged state authorities and healthcare providers to implement the advisory’s recommendations promptly to minimize the adverse health effects of the heatwave on vulnerable populations.
