Guwahati, 28th Sept: The family of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who died in Singapore on September 19, has lodged an online complaint with the Assam Criminal Investigation Department (CID) seeking a full probe into the circumstances of his death.
The complaint, filed by Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg, sister-in-law Pamie Barthakur, and uncle Manoj Borthakur, names the singer’s manager Sidharth Sarma and Syamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, alleging “negligence.” Sources said it also lists all members of the Singapore trip, including Assamese residents who invited Garg to a yacht party where he was last seen alive.
Authorities confirmed receipt of the complaint and said the CID will conduct a detailed investigation. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has issued summons to Sarma, Mahanta, and about a dozen others who were on the yacht, directing them to appear by October 6. The summons were routed through the Indian Embassy in Singapore, while Interpol lookout notices have been issued to prevent the key suspects from leaving the country, officials added.
The 52-year-old singer was found floating face down in the sea after going for a swim near Singapore’s coast. He had travelled to the city-state for the three-day North East India Festival, which was cancelled following his death.
Protests have erupted across Assam, with supporters demanding immediate arrests and a transparent probe. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured the public that “no one will be spared” if found guilty, emphasising that the state government is committed to accountability.
