Guwahati, 12th Dec:
The Special Investigation Team probing the death of Assam’s cultural icon Zubeen Garg has filed a 12,000-page chargesheet before a Guwahati court, naming seven individuals, including the singer’s cousin, on serious charges.

Cousin Sandipan Garg, who accompanied Zubeen on his visit to Singapore in September, has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 12, triggering widespread grief across Assam, the northeast, and the Indian music fraternity.

Others named in the chargesheet on murder charges include:

  • Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta
  • Manager Siddartha Sarma
  • Bandmate Sekhar Jyoti Goswami
  • Co-singer Amritprava Mahanta
  • Personal security officers Paresh Baishya and Nandeshwar Bora

The SIT arrived at the court under tight security, transporting documents in three large boxes due to the volume of material compiled during months of investigation.

“This is a meticulously done investigation… independent documents prove the case. The motive has been clearly tracked. This is a case in which conviction is possible,” an official said.

The probe included a SIT team flying to Singapore, where they coordinated with local authorities and questioned nearly 300 witnesses connected to Zubeen’s final days.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently told the state assembly that Zubeen’s death was “a murder”, asserting that the SIT would build a watertight case.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force, conducting its own independent probe, stated earlier that preliminary findings did not indicate foul play, adding that their investigation may take another three months.

The chargesheet is expected to bring more clarity to the circumstances surrounding the iconic singer’s death, marking a major step in the high-profile investigation.
