New Delhi, 11th July: In a bizarre twist to a mobile phone snatching case in south Delhi, police have uncovered that the theft was allegedly orchestrated by a woman who wanted to delete intimate photos with her lover stored on her husband’s phone.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Ankit Chauhan, the incident took place on June 19 in Sultanpur. The woman, whose identity is being withheld, allegedly roped in two men to execute the snatching. “She provided them with her husband’s daily routine and work timings so they could intercept him,” said DCP Chauhan.
One of the accused, Ankit Gahlot (27), has been arrested. During interrogation, he revealed that the woman was in a relationship with another man and feared her husband had compromising photos of them on his phone.
On June 19, the woman’s husband was walking near Old UK Paint Factory, Main Market Road in Sultanpur when two masked men on a scooter snatched his phone and fled. He immediately filed a police complaint via PCR call.
Police investigations began with CCTV footage and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) scans from nearby Vasant Kunj, which helped track down the scooter’s registration number. It was found to have been rented for a single day from Daryaganj.
Using rental documents and Aadhaar data, the accused duo was traced to Balotra in Barmer district, Rajasthan. Before fleeing the city, they had checked into a hotel in Old Delhi to avoid detection.
While one accused has been arrested, the other accomplice remains at large. Police confirmed that the woman has been “bound down” under legal provisions and further interrogation is underway. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the second suspect.
“This case shows the extent to which people may go to hide personal secrets,” said a senior police officer.
