New Delhi, 8th Nov: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan today addressed the Eighth 180 Upvas Parna Ceremony of Jain Acharya Hansratna Surishwarji Maharaj at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. The event marked the culmination of Acharya Ji’s 180-day fast — an act of deep devotion and discipline that he has observed for the eighth time.

Expressing his reverence, the Vice-President said he felt deeply honoured to participate in the sacred Mahaparna of Divyatapasvi Acharya Hansratna Surishwarji Maharaj, describing it as a spiritual moment that exemplifies India’s timeless tradition of self-restraint and moral strength.

Highlighting Jainism’s contribution to peace and humanity, Shri Radhakrishnan said its core teachings — Ahimsa (non-violence), Satya (truth), Aparigraha (non-possessiveness), and Anekantavada (pluralism) — have shaped India’s moral consciousness and inspired global peace movements. He noted that Mahatma Gandhi’s embrace of Ahimsa during the freedom struggle was rooted in Jain philosophy and continues to guide peace advocacy across the world.

The Vice-President also emphasized Jainism’s modern-day relevance in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living. “The Jain ethos of compassion toward animals and vegetarianism is globally recognised as a model of ecological responsibility,” he said, recalling that he personally adopted vegetarianism 25 years ago after visiting Kashi, a decision that cultivated humility and compassion in his life.

Applauding the government’s cultural initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shri Radhakrishnan said that the recognition of Prakrit as a Classical Language and the launch of the Gyan Bharatham Mission reflect India’s growing commitment to preserving ancient manuscripts and linguistic heritage.

He also highlighted Jainism’s deep influence on Tamil Nadu’s history, literature, and philosophy, citing classical works such as Silappathikaram by Ilango Adigal and Perungathai by Kongu Velir as examples of Jain ethical and spiritual ideals expressed through Tamil literature. He added that Tirukkural and Sangam texts bear Jain philosophical imprints, while historic Jain monasteries across Tamil Nadu once served as great centres of learning.

Commending Acharya Hansratna Surishwarji Maharaj’s spiritual leadership, the Vice-President said, “True strength lies not in power or wealth, but in restraint, compassion, and discipline.” He praised the Acharya’s mission — Save Culture, Save Family, Build Nation — as a guiding philosophy for modern India to reconnect with its roots and values.

The Vice-President concluded by asserting that the preservation of India’s moral and cultural heritage is essential to building a strong, value-based nation that stands as an example of peace and harmony for the world.
