Salem, 28th Feb: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Friday inaugurated a new academic block at the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Salem, Tamil Nadu, stressing the need to strengthen India’s handloom heritage by aligning tradition with modern technology.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President highlighted Salem’s historic and economic importance, recalling its association with national leader C. Rajagopalachari. He also referred to the recent installation of Rajaji’s bust at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Describing IIHT Salem as a vital bridge between indigenous craftsmanship and modern textile science, he said the institute plays a key role in enhancing productivity, improving quality standards, and enabling market-driven production while preserving the authenticity of handwoven textiles.
Highlighting India’s diverse handloom legacy—from Banarasi silk and Bengal’s Jamdani to Assam’s Muga silk and Kanchipuram sarees—the Vice President underlined Tamil Nadu’s vibrant weaving clusters including Salem, Erode, Bhavani, Madurai and Chennimalai.
Referring to the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, he said the pact would enhance the global competitiveness of India’s textile industry and boost exports. Textile shipments from Salem and leather exports from Ambur are expected to rise, he added.
Calling for a forward-looking approach, the Vice President urged stakeholders to transform handloom into a future-ready creative industry that generates value, upholds dignity of labour, and ensures sustainable livelihoods for artisans.
He also visited an exhibition at IIHT Salem showcasing handloom products from across the country.
Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister R. Rajendran and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
