Thiruvananthapuram, 9th Nov: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised the Southern Railway after visuals surfaced of school students allegedly singing an RSS song onboard the newly inaugurated Vande Bharat Express from Ernakulam to Bengaluru.
In a statement, the Chief Minister said the incident “deserves protest” and accused the railway authorities of allowing communal politics to infiltrate a national institution. Sharing the video on X, Vijayan remarked that the incident “exposed how eminent national institutions are being subverted by Sangh Parivar politics,” urging all secular forces to resist such “dangerous moves.”

He said including a song linked to the RSS, an organisation accused of spreading communal hatred, in an official government event violates the Constitution’s secular fabric. “Using the Railways to propagate communal politics is unacceptable,” Vijayan added, calling it a “mockery” of both the Railways and India’s freedom movement.
The controversy sparked political outrage in Kerala. Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan called the act “illegal and undemocratic,” alleging that the BJP was trying to replicate divisive politics seen in northern India. Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Ramesh Chennithala termed it “a despicable political conspiracy” and an “insult to the nation.”
Vijayan said that the Railways, once a symbol of India’s secular nationalism, was being misused to promote the RSS’s agenda. He urged citizens to recognise and oppose such efforts to undermine secularism.
Amid criticism, Southern Railway deleted its initial social media post but later reposted the same video, clarifying that “students of Saraswathi Vidyalaya performed their school song” during the train’s inaugural run.
