Chennai, 30th March: Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Sunday announced that he will contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Perambur and Trichy East constituencies, marking his electoral debut with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
Unveiling the party’s candidates, Vijay urged voters to give TVK “one chance” and rallied support around the party’s poll symbol. “Vote for whistle, it’s a whistle revolution election,” he said, asserting that all TVK candidates represent a unified vision.
The 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly will go to polls on April 23 in a single phase, setting the stage for a multi-cornered contest.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, faces competition from the NDA bloc comprising All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party, alongside new entrant TVK and other regional players.
Both Perambur and Trichy East are currently held by the DMK, adding significance to Vijay’s choice of constituencies.
Positioning his party as a “people’s alliance,” Vijay said TVK candidates come from ordinary backgrounds and represent clean politics. He criticised rival parties over allegations of corruption and governance failures.
Among key contests, TVK’s V.S. Babu will challenge Chief Minister Stalin in Kolathur, while Selvam, a former Congress leader now with TVK, will contest against Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in Chepauk.
The actor-politician outlined his party’s promises, including a drug-free Tamil Nadu, financial assistance for unemployed youth above 29 years, and a law to ensure transparency and accountability in government recruitment.
The elections are expected to witness a five-cornered contest, with parties like PMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi also in the fray.
Vijay’s entry adds a new dimension to Tamil Nadu politics, as TVK seeks to position itself as an alternative force in the state.
