Chennai, 4th July: In a major political announcement, actor-turned-politician Vijay has been formally named the chief ministerial candidate of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The decision was taken at the TVK State Executive Committee meeting held at the party headquarters in Chennai on Friday.

The party categorically ruled out any alliance with either the DMK or the BJP, signalling its intention to contest the polls independently. A special resolution to this effect was passed during the meeting, which was chaired by Vijay himself.

The executive committee also proposed holding a state-level conference next month, aimed at mobilizing support across the state. In addition, the party announced plans to conduct public meetings in villages to communicate TVK’s ideology to grassroots voters.

In a sharp political statement, the committee condemned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent remarks on the English language, calling them “malicious” and a direct assault on Tamil Nadu’s two-language policy. The party reiterated its opposition to the imposition of Hindi and Sanskrit, asserting that it would resist any such moves in the state.

TVK also slammed the Election Commission of India over its ongoing electoral roll revision, claiming it is aimed at reducing minority votes and boosting pro-BJP vote share, which the party said was “against the spirit of democracy.”

Multiple resolutions were passed during the meeting, many of which focused on strengthening Vijay’s public outreach ahead of the 2026 elections. With this strategic positioning, TVK has clearly begun laying the groundwork for what could be a high-stakes political debut for the popular Tamil actor.
