New Delhi,1st Aug: The Election Commission of India (EC) on Friday announced that the election for the post of Vice President will be held on September 9. The election is being held to fill the vacancy created by Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation last month.
The EC has issued a detailed schedule for the election:
- Notification Issued: August 7
- Last Date for Nomination: August 21
- Polling and Result: September 9
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of all members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. With a combined strength of 422 members in a total electoral college of 782, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a significant advantage and is expected to win comfortably. The winning candidate will require 391 votes.
Jagdeep Dhankhar had stepped down as Vice President on July 21, more than two years before the end of his term, citing medical reasons. However, sources have hinted at a breakdown of trust with the government, with a “tipping point” being his reported refusal to align with the government’s stand on the impeachment of Justice Yashwant Varma.
According to Clause 2 of Article 68 of the Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the office of the Vice President must be held “as soon as possible.” The person elected to the position will be entitled to a full term of five years.
