VHP Calls for President’s Rule Amid Sandeshkhali Crisis: Alok Kumar

New Delhi, 23rd Feb:
Alok Kumar, the Central Working President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Senior Advocate, has issued a fervent call for immediate intervention in the escalating turmoil gripping Sandeshkhali, West Bengal. Kumar’s impassioned plea comes in response to the disturbing scenes of violence and lawlessness unfolding in the region, compounded by what appears to be tacit support and protection from the state government. In light of these alarming developments, Kumar advocates for the imposition of President’s Rule as a necessary measure to restore order and uphold justice.

The turmoil dates back to January 4-5, 2024, when a team from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) commenced an investigation into the PD scam in Sandeshkhali village, located in 24 Parganas. Despite conducting their duties within the bounds of the law, the ED team faced aggression from supporters of the ruling party. Slogans were raised, and the ED’s vehicles were vandalized. Shockingly, officers conducting the investigation were attacked, leading to severe injuries for three of them, necessitating immediate hospitalization.

According to the VHP’s General Secretary, this incident poses a significant challenge to India’s governance. Both the Governor and the judiciary of the state have expressed concern over the situation. Subsequent investigations into the matter revealed disturbing facts. It was uncovered that Sheikh Shahjahan holds sway in Sandeshkhali, superseding the authority of law enforcement and government institutions. Shahjahan is reported to forcibly seize land from individuals without recourse for the affected parties.

The Chairperson of the Women’s Commission personally investigated allegations of sexual assault and rape in the area. Shockingly, findings revealed that Shahjahan and his supporters were openly engaging in sexual violence against women. The situation escalated to the extent that victims’ complaints were not being registered by authorities. Families, terrorized by threats, would comply with demands to leave their daughters at the party office upon receiving messages. Suwendu Adhikari and Vrinda Karat were allowed to visit the area by the court, where Adhikari interacted with women who shared harrowing stories of their experiences.

Despite being a woman herself, the Chief Minister of the state has been criticized for failing to address crimes against women effectively. Activists were reportedly prevented from discussing the issue with her. Instead of taking action against Shahjahan, the state government is accused of shielding him. The severity of the allegations has prompted calls for President’s Rule in Bengal, raising questions about the rule of law and adherence to constitutional principles in the state.
