Abu Dhabi, 11th Jan: Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi on Sunday reaffirmed India’s commitment to a just, equitable and sustainable global energy transition while delivering India’s national statement at the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi.
Addressing the plenary, Joshi said India’s clean energy transition is guided by the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future, anchored in equity, inclusivity and long-term policy stability. He reiterated India’s pledge to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel installed capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
Highlighting major milestones, the Union Minister said India crossed 266 GW of renewable energy capacity and achieved 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025 — five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution target under the Paris Agreement.
Joshi said India is strengthening grid infrastructure, deploying energy storage, developing Green Energy Corridors and promoting innovative hybrid and round-the-clock renewable energy projects to build resilient power systems. He also highlighted efforts to expand domestic manufacturing of solar modules, wind turbines, batteries and electrolysers to strengthen clean energy supply chains.
Calling India one of the most attractive global destinations for clean energy investment, he said stable policies and transparent markets continue to draw strong investor interest. He noted that India alone is expected to require around USD 300 billion in clean energy investments by 2030, creating opportunities across renewables, storage, green hydrogen, grids and manufacturing.
Emphasising a people-centric approach, Joshi cited flagship schemes such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, under which 2.5 million households have installed rooftop solar, and the PM-KUSUM scheme, which has benefitted over 2.17 million farmers through solarisation of agricultural pumps and feeders.
He called for enhanced multilateral cooperation, stressing the need for technology transfer, low-cost finance, capacity building and harmonisation of standards to help developing countries scale renewable energy without compromising development goals.
On the sidelines, Joshi also participated in a high-level dialogue on reimagining energy futures and held talks with UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak to strengthen India–UAE cooperation on climate action, clean energy, manufacturing and energy storage.
He congratulated the Dominican Republic on assuming the IRENA Presidency and expressed confidence that enhanced multilateral cooperation will accelerate a sustainable and inclusive global energy transition.
