Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Committee in Uttarakhand has completed its work and will deliver its report on February 2.

The UCC Committee was established to fulfill a promise made to the people of the state during the 2022 assembly elections.

Dhami stated that after receiving the report, it will be presented to the Cabinet and then action will be taken in the state assembly to enact the Uniform Civil Code Act.

The panel on Uniform Civil Code was formed in Uttarakhand on May 27, 2022, under the leadership of Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai.

The UCC was a key promise made to the people of the state during the 2022 assembly polls. Article 44 of the Constitution states that the state should strive to establish a Uniform Civil Code throughout India, which would include common laws regarding marriage, inheritance, adoption, and other matters.

The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code has been a contentious issue over the past four years, with differing opinions. However, it gained significant attention in June of last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated for its implementation in a speech in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

PM Modi argued that the country cannot function with two sets of laws and that the Uniform Civil Code aligns with the principles and ideals of the Constitution. He also highlighted that the Supreme Court has called for the implementation of the UCC.

PM Modi criticized opposition parties for playing vote bank politics by opposing the UCC.

The UCC Committee in Uttarakhand has completed its work and will submit its report on February 2.

The report will then be presented to the Cabinet, and subsequent action will be taken in the state assembly to enact the Uniform Civil Code Act.

The implementation of the UCC has been a topic of debate, but it gained prominence after PM Modi’support and the Supreme Court’s call for its implementation.
