WASHINGTON – Russian former President Dmitry Medvedev who serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council on Saturday had made a reference to the Soviet-era automatic nuclear retaliation system “Dead Hand”.

The tensions soared between the US and Russia after President Donald Trump ordered deployment of two nuclear submarines to undisclosed locations “closer to Russia”, in response to an alleged threat made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Media reported that as peace talks in Ukraine began, now appears to have escalated into a dangerous standoff between the two most powerful nuclear-armed nations with Trump moving away from mere rehotorics to overt military posturing.

Trump announced on a Truth Social media post,” I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances,” he added.

He referred to Medvedev’s remarks in response to Trump’s “dead economies” jibe at Russia and India.

Medvedev said “And about India’s and Russia’s ‘dead economies’ and ‘entering very dangerous territory’ – well, let him remember his favorite movies about ‘the walking dead,’ as well as how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be”.

Trump was asked about the deployment of nuclear submarines, he explained, ““Well, we had to do that. We just have to be careful. A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate.

He added, “So I do that on the basis of safety for our people. A threat was made by a former president of Russia, and we’re going to protect our people.”
