Washington, 18th April.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin lauded the India-US collaboration in jointly producing fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force as “revolutionary.”

Speaking before lawmakers on Wednesday, Austin emphasized the transformative nature of the landmark deal, which was unveiled last June during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic Official State Visit to the US.

Under the agreement, General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have entered into a memorandum of understanding to manufacture fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This partnership marks a crucial milestone in bilateral defense cooperation between the two nations.

During his testimony before the House Appropriations Subcommittee, Secretary Austin underscored the strong relationship between the United States and India. He highlighted the recent strides in defense collaboration, including the joint production of a jet engine and an armored vehicle.

Austin remarked, “We recently have enabled India to produce a jet weapon, a jet engine in India. And that’s kind of revolutionary. That will provide a great capability to them. We are also co-producing an armored vehicle with India. So, all of these things, when you add them up, are probably more than we have seen happen in that region in a very, very long time.”

The cooperative efforts between India and the US in defense manufacturing are poised to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces while fostering closer ties between the two strategic partners.

This latest endeavor signifies a significant step forward in bolstering defense capabilities and promoting regional security in the Indo-Pacific region.
