Lucknow, 7th Aug: The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has approved a new scholarship scheme, “Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee-Chevening Uttar Pradesh State Government Scholarship Scheme,” to support financially weak but meritorious students. The decision was announced after a cabinet meeting held on Thursday.
This initiative, a collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh government and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), will provide a golden opportunity for five students each year to pursue a Master’s degree at top British universities. The scholarship is named in honor of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The scheme aims to empower talented students who cannot afford to study abroad. Selected students will be sent to prestigious institutions such as Cambridge University, London School of Economics, Imperial College of London, and King’s College of London for a one-year Master’s course.
The program will run from the 2025-26 academic year to 2027-28, with an option for renewal until March 30, 2028. The total cost per student is estimated to be between 38,048 to 42,076 pounds (approximately 45-50 lakh rupees). The UP government will cover half the cost (19,800 pounds), with the remaining amount funded by the UK’s FCDO.
The scholarship is comprehensive, covering tuition fees, examination and research charges, a monthly living allowance, and round-trip economy-class airfare. The selection process will be fair and transparent, based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the UP government and the FCDO, to ensure that the most deserving students are chosen. According to a UP government spokesperson, the scheme is inspired by the exceptional achievements and visionary thinking of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the field of education.
