Lucknow, 11th Aug: The monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly commenced today amidst a ruckus, as MLAs from the Samajwadi Party (SP) staged a pre-session protest outside the Vidhan Bhavan. Holding banners and posters, the opposition members chanted slogans like “Aap chalaiye madhushala, hum chalayenge PDA paathshala” (You run a liquor shop, we will run a PDA school), setting a stormy tone for the four-day session.
The opposition has been vocal in its demand to extend the session, which the government has scheduled to end on August 14. In a session expected to be dominated by heated debates, the SP is preparing to raise a range of issues, including school mergers, the privatization of electricity, the ongoing floods in the state, the recent voter list revision, and concerns over law and order and unemployment.
A key feature of this session is the government’s plan for a non-stop, 24-hour discussion on its “Vision Document 2047.” However, this move has been sharply criticized by the opposition, with SP leader Akhilesh Yadav calling the marathon discussion “madness” and a waste of valuable legislative time.
The start of the session was preceded by separate strategy meetings held by both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party to prepare for the expected clashes on the floor of the House.
