New Delhi, 1st August. Union Minister for Education and Skill Development Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday introduced the Central Universities (Amendment), Bill 2022 in Lok Sabha for conversion of the National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI), a Deemed to be University into Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV), a Central University.

The GSV is envisioned to transform the expanding transportation sector. The scope of the Vishwavidyalaya will extend beyond the Railways to cover the entire transport sector.

The jurisdiction of the University will be the whole of India. The GSV will be funded and administered by the Ministry of Railways.

NRTI was established as a Deemed to be University on July 26, 2018 and operational from the campus of the National Academy of Indian Railways, Vadodara.

The GSV seeks to accomplish the following objectives:

    1. Promote the transportation sector to cater to new industry demands through high quality teaching, research and skill development in various disciplines.
    2. Foster collaboration between the public sector, private industry and academia.
    3. Innovate programmes relevant to current industry needs.
    4. GSV will focus on inter-disciplinary Research & Development (R&D) to develop customized solutions for India’s transportation needs.
    5. GSV will integrate the existing Central Training Institutes (CTIs) of Indian Railways as its off-campus.
    6. Setting up of this University directly supports the vision and goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
