UN humanitarians agencies and the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Tuesday have launched a $2.6 billion appeal to provide life-saving assistance and protection to over 8 million people in the DRC.

UN agencies reported new outbreaks of violence in the volatile eastern region are forcing affected populations to be repeatedly displaced.

Some 6.7 million internally displaced people in the DRC are facing serious flooding and a resurgence of measles and cholera epidemics, increasing the vulnerability of people affected by more than three decades of armed conflict, UN stated.

It said that chronic needs and vulnerabilities persist in the DRC.

The agencies estimates indicated that 25.4 million people will be food insecure this year, while 8.4 million will be affected by acute malnutrition.

Over a million children no longer go to school due to armed conflicts, UN agencies concluded.
