Ukraine Strikes Crimean Bridge with Underwater Explosives in Daring Attack

Kyiv/Moscow, 4th JuneUkraine’s intelligence agency, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), announced on Tuesday that it had carried out a dramatic underwater attack on the strategically vital Crimean Bridge, which connects mainland Russia to the annexed Crimean Peninsula. This marks the third such assault on the structure since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022.

According to the SBU, agents successfully planted and detonated 1,100 kilograms of explosives beneath the bridge’s supporting pillars. The first explosion occurred at 4:44 a.m. local time. The agency said the mission took several months of planning and was overseen by SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk.

“God loves the Trinity, and the SBU never repeats the same move,” Malyuk declared. “This time, we struck underwater.”

The attack caused “severe damage” to the bridge’s underwater piers, temporarily suspending traffic across the Kerch Strait. Although the full extent of the destruction remains unclear, road and rail transport was halted in the early hours and again mid-afternoon, resuming briefly by 6 p.m. local time.

The 19-kilometer Crimean Bridge is not only a logistical lifeline for Russia’s military operations in southern Ukraine but also a powerful symbol of President Vladimir Putin’s grip on Crimea, which was annexed in 2014. Built at a cost of $3.7 billion, the bridge opened in 2018 and has since become a critical supply route for Moscow’s forces.

Tuesday’s underwater assault follows another major operation by the SBU on Sunday, when drones targeted multiple airfields deep inside Russian territory. That raid damaged a reported 34% of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers and caused an estimated $7 billion in damages.

Ukraine has previously targeted the Crimean Bridge in October 2022 and July 2023, using a truck bomb and a sea drone respectively. Both incidents led to temporary closures and swift Russian repair efforts.

In the aftermath of the latest strike, Russian state media confirmed that maritime traffic near Sevastopol was also temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

With each bold operation, Ukraine continues to demonstrate its resolve and technical capabilities, sending a clear message to Moscow that its strategic assets remain vulnerable — even deep behind the front lines.
