London, 10th Jan: UK MP and Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Priti Patel has raised serious concern over the rising violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, calling on the UK Government to use its diplomatic influence to protect religious minorities and help restore stability in the neighbouring country.

In a public statement and a formal letter addressed to the UK Foreign Secretary, Patel said the situation in Bangladesh is “very concerning” and warned that religious freedoms must be protected.

Citing reports that at least six Hindus were killed within an 18-day period, Patel described the developments as unacceptable and urged the government to take urgent diplomatic action.

“The murders of Hindus and the persecution taking place are wrong and must stop. The UK Government must use its influence and convening powers to work to bring about stability in Bangladesh and a future where religious freedoms are protected and Hindus are safe,” Patel said.

In her letter, Patel sought details on what steps the UK Government has taken over the past year to monitor the situation and engage with Bangladeshi authorities, including whether British ministers have raised the issue directly with their counterparts in Dhaka. She also asked what assurances have been received regarding measures to protect Hindu communities and whether the Bangladesh High Commissioner in the UK has been engaged on the matter.

Highlighting concern among the Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK, Patel further asked whether the government plans to make a statement in the House of Commons outlining its response and diplomatic approach.

She also called for coordinated regional efforts, using diplomatic influence and convening powers, to help stabilise Bangladesh and ensure respect and protection for religious minorities.
